Radio Algérie Internationale – Wassila Benhamed Interview with Dr. Ahmat Yacoub Dabio, President of the Center for Studies on Development, Extremism Prevention, and Liberty Without Borders
Fighting has intensified between the Sudanese army and the RSF militia in the Kordofan region, following the RSF’s takeover last Sunday of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. The militia has since attempted to expand the conflict into neighboring Kordofan by attacking several towns in North Kordofan State.
This escalation comes as the Sudanese army and its allies mobilize to respond to the massacres committed by the RSF in El-Fasher. New clashes erupted on Friday and Saturday in several areas of North and West Kordofan, while drones targeted RSF positions in South Kordofan and North Darfur. These confrontations are driving waves of population displacement, as civilians flee violence and ongoing human rights violations attributed to the RSF.
Dr. Ahmat Yacoub Dabio – Radio Algérie Internationale
Clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF have intensified significantly in the Kordofan region, just days after the RSF seized the strategic city of El-Fasher — capital of North Darfur. Emboldened by this symbolic and military victory, the militia launched offensives against several towns in neighboring North Kordofan, expanding the scope of hostilities.
This surge in violence unfolds amid deep public anxiety, exacerbated by the atrocities in El-Fasher, where human rights organizations estimate that around 2,000 civilians were killed. Fearing further escalation and new abuses, waves of displaced people are fleeing combat zones, worsening an already critical humanitarian crisis.
Faced with the risk of full-scale collapse, the international community appears, for the first time, to be taking the gravity of Sudan’s situation seriously. The crimes committed in El-Fasher and the intensifying conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF have prompted heightened engagement from regional and global actors. In this context, the possibility of imposing a ceasefire is no longer off the table — an urgent measure aimed at protecting civilians caught in the crossfire, as humanitarian infrastructure nears total breakdown and displacement accelerates.
