The CEDPE calls on the countries of Lake Chad to accelerate development

Samedi 28 Juillet 2018

In terms of education, the rate is the lowest in the world and extremists exploit this flaw to manipulate youth.

The President-founder of the Center of Studies for the Development and Prevention of Extremism (CEDPE), Mr. Ahmat Yacoub Dabio, in a interview by the chanel AlJazeera, invites the countries bordering the Lake Chad to take zealously the process of socio-economic development of the Lake Chad region. He called for a common strategy and investment to accelerate the process of socio-economic development. Furthermore, he pointed out that the socio-economic indicators in this region are deplorable. In terms of education, the rate is the lowest in the world and nebulous extremists exploit this flaw to manipulate youth. For instance, out of the 2,200 repentants of Boko Haram, only 5 can of them can read and write, according to a study from the CEDPE that will be published before the end of the year 2018. Thus, the literacy rate among Boko Haram repentants is about 0.2%, a disturbing figure that reflects a lack of increased investment and a palpable vulnerability of the Lake District. The CEDPE is organizing two workshops related to this theme in October and December. In addition, the reintegration of the repentant should not be neglected knowing that the passive strategy of quartering without other alternatives have a risk : to bring opposite results to those hoped. A serious investment in favor of a first approach of development in the very short term, would allow to change almost immediately the lives of the populations.
