Dimanche 17 Août 2025

The Center reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable solutions rooted in justice, solidarity, and human dignity. It invites academic, civic, and diplomatic actors to join a regional roundtable on forced migration and human security, scheduled for September in Kigali.

N’Djamena, August 17, 2025 — Press Release

The Center for Studies on Development and the Prevention of Extremism (CEDPE) expresses deep sorrow and outrage over the tragic shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa, where at least 35 migrants, including children, are missing after an overcrowded boat capsized. Among the victims are Sudanese nationals who fled the war that has ravaged their country since April 2023.

This tragedy, confirmed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), highlights the devastating consequences of forced migration and the extreme risks faced by thousands of civilians seeking safety.

“The drowning of these migrants is not an isolated accident, but a symptom of a failing international system in the face of prolonged humanitarian crises. We must act collectively to ensure safe and dignified routes for those fleeing conflict,” said Dr. Mahamat Ahmat Yacoub, President of CEDPE.

CEDPE calls on:

  • African and European governments to strengthen sea rescue operations.

  • International institutions to open legal and safe migration pathways.

  • Regional partners to intensify efforts in conflict prevention and community resilience.

The Center reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable solutions rooted in justice, solidarity, and human dignity. It invites academic, civic, and diplomatic actors to join a regional roundtable on forced migration and human security, scheduled for September in Kigali.
